4 Ways to Search for Dietetic Preceptors on LinkedIn
LinkedIn is one of the most powerful network tools to use with your search for dietetic preceptors. It is a great way to find out who works at what organization as well as what dietitians might be located in your area.
This post is part II of our series. Check out our first post Finding Dietetic Preceptors Using LinkedIn. And before you get started make sure that your profile is in top shape using our steps on how to Create an All-Star LinkedIn Profile as a Dietetic Intern.
While LinkedIn can feel intimidating, we have outlined our top 4 ways to search for dietetic preceptors.
1. Search for Dietetic Preceptors at local facilities.
If you type “Dietitian” and the name of a local business/facility, it will show dietitians that currently have that facility listed in their resume. You can then either send them an email (if you know the business email structure) or you can send a “connect” request and message.
2. Network in dietitian specific groups.
There are several large groups on LinkedIn including The Dietitian Connection Group and The Dietitian Jobs Network. With both of these groups, you can add a post specifing that you are looking for dietetic preceptors.
Make sure that you are specific with your request including the rotation type (clinical, foodservice), the duration (number of weeks), the location (city or how far you are willing to travel) and the timeframe (specific month or season).
To make this request standout, make sure that you introduce yourself and provide 1 or 2 sentences about you and why you are a standout potential dietetic intern. For example, if you speak multiple languages, don’t be afraid to highlight your bilingual skills. If you are an expert at Canva or social media wizard, point out a few ways that you might be able to help future preceptors.
3. Utilize your personal and professional networks.
Send messages to all of your dietitian contacts (either via LinkedIn or email) and ask them to connect you to anyone that might be able to help you secure a rotation site.
Utilize the power of networking. If you click on someone’s profile and notice that they are a mutual connection to a potential dietetic preceptor, ask your contact to make a virtual introduction. People are much more likely to help out a friend of a friend rather than a stranger. The virtual introduction can be through LinkedIn or via email (preferred).
4. Grow your network to maximize your connections.
Befriend every professional and personal connection that you can find. Once they accept your request, send a message to let them know you are searching for dietetic preceptors. LinkedIn will also provide suggestions based on your interests and geographic region. You will easily be able to see if any mutual connections exist. Ask your network to make personal introductions on LinkedIn or via email.
While it can be challenging to secure preceptors for a distance dietetic internship, we are confident that you will be successful if you leverage your network and are persistent. Networking is an important skill that will also come in handy when you launch your own business.
